U.S. Green Building Council Announces Winners of ‘Sustainable Cities Tech Challenge’

The challenge was the first of its kind at the annual Municipal Green Building Conference and Expo

The 17th annual Municipal Green Building Conference and Expo (MGBCE) hosted by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) took place on April 19, 2018, in Los Angeles, Calif., accommodating over 650 attendees and offering knowledge on approaches to integrating sustainability into municipal action. This year’s edition marked the first ever inclusion of the Sustainable Cities Tech Challenge which pitted new technologies in competition. The challenge was a joint effort between USGBC and the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI).

The competition included three different categories, including Smart Infrastructure, Energy & Water Efficiency, and Waste. Each category had its own winner while the event also crowned an overall winner.

The winner of the Energy & Water Efficiency category was Infinite Cooling. This technology “addresses massive water consumption in the water-energy nexus,” which looks to “enable water-sustainable thermoelectric power using significantly less water by capturing water from cooling tower plumes.”

While the overall winner was awarded a $15,000 prize, the remaining two category winners each received $3,000 in prize money. Beyond the cash prize, category winners will also receive in-kind support from sponsors or partners. They will also be granted a membership opportunity for LACI’s business incubation program, as well as access to the La Kretz Innovation Campus and the Advanced Prototyping Center.
