UNESCO to Present International Year of Water Cooperation at World Water Week

Aug. 22, 2012
World Water Week will take place in Stockholm, Sweden August 26 to 31

UNESCO will contribute to World Water Week in Stockholm, August 26 to 31, with the presentation of several publications and the organization of various events. On this occasion, UNESCO and UN-Water will also unveil the general thrust of the International Year of Water Cooperation (2013).

Activities to be implemented in 2013 will be presented during a workshop organized by UN-Water and UNESCO on August 27. The General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 2013 as International Year of Water Cooperation in 2012 following a proposal made by Tadjikistan and UN-Water has asked UNESCO to organize events for the year.

Also during World Water Week, the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) will host two major events: Green Accounting, with a Focus on World Water Scenarios for Our Future on August 26 and Lessons from the World Water Development Report 4 on August 27. The most recent World Water Report was presented at the World Forum in Marseille, France in March 2012.

Carbon and Water Footprints, a publication issued by the WWAP, will be the subject of another presentation. The study traces the origins of the concepts of carbon and water footprints and compares the two.

WWAP will also present a summary of the World Water Development Report during the Week, as well as two other publications: Green Accounting and Data Improvement for Water Resources and Water and Sustainability: A Review of Targets, Tools and Regional Cases, a joint publication undertaken with UNESCO.

Organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), World Water Week takes place every year in the Swedish capital. With a program of debates and other events, it brings together stakeholders from all over the world so as to promote their reinforcement of capacities, the establishment of partnerships and follow up on international processes and programs concerning water and development.
