EPA Set to Co-Host White House Conference on Cooperative Conservation

Aug. 19, 2005

EPA will join its federal partners in co-hosting a public-private forum to exchange information about successful partnerships in cooperative conservation. EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson and Deputy Administrator Marcus Peacock will head the agency delegation Aug. 29- 31 in St. Louis, Mo.

The conservation effort builds on a history begun in 1908 when President Theodore Roosevelt held the first conservation conference to formulate a national policy based on the efficient use of resources. Seeking better and broader conservation in the 21st Century, President George W. Bush signed the Executive Order Facilitation of Cooperative Conservation a year ago.

This order directs the federal agencies that oversee environmental and natural resource policies and programs to promote cooperative conservation in full partnership with states, local governments, tribes, and individuals.

The mission of the Environmental Protection Agency is to protect human health and the environment. Since 1970, EPA has been working for a cleaner, healthier environment for the American people by implementing and enforcing the nation's federal environmental laws and regulations. In keeping with the spirit of the Executive Order, EPA is collaborating with federal, state and local governments on a variety of projects across the country. During the conference, EPA will highlight the agency's efforts to cooperate on all levels of government and with non-governmental organizations.

The White House Conference on Cooperative Conservation will be held at the St. Louis Convention Center, 701 Convention Plaza, St Louis.
