Earth Tech Joint Awarded Venture in Mexico Wastewater Facility

June 7, 2007

An Earth Tech joint venture has been awarded a $32.8 million (355 million pesos) contract to design, build, finance and operate a wastewater treatment facility in Querétaro, Mexico. Earth Tech, a business unit of Tyco International Ltd., and JV partner Servicios de Agua Trident, a subsidiary of Mitsui & Co., Inc., were awarded the 20-year contract by the Querétaro State Water Commission.

The 17.1 million gallons per day San Pedro Mártir wastewater treatment plant, as well as a sanitation collection system leading to the facility, will take two years to design and build. The work will include engineering design, procurement and testing of the new infrastructure.

In addition, Earth Tech will operate and maintain the wastewater treatment plant, including biosolids disposal, for 18 years. Some of the wastewater, approximately 2.28 mgd, will be treated for reuse in industrial and agricultural processes, as well as for the irrigation of green spaces throughout the city. The city will operate the new collection system.

“This important project will help reduce the impact that wastewater from local residents and businesses has on the environment,” said Miguel Alonzo, who heads up Earth Tech’s operations in Mexico. “Because some of the wastewater will be recycled, Querétaro will soon be able to minimize the amount of potable water that’s used for industrial and irrigation purposes, while ensuring that it can continue to meet the growing community’s needs in the future.”

Financing for the project, which will substantially improve health conditions for more than 500,000 Queretaro citizens, was arranged by the JV team of Servicios de Agua Trident and Earth Tech. The improvements are designed to bring the city into compliance with national wastewater reuse and discharge standards.
