Kingston, ON., Canada, has become the first Canadian city to install pipe monitors to measure sewage leaks in real time. In addition to installing the leak monitors, the city of Kingston also is working to educate homeowners about proper wastewater management, including an educational campaign regarding what kinds of waste are flushable, as reported by local news source CTV News.
“For the last 15 to 20 years we have provided information to the public when bypasses occur,” said Jim Keech, President and CEO of Utilities Kingston. “But now we have a real-time system developed in-house by some of our technical experts.”
When the city began using the real time monitors, they discovered that their earlier calculations were underestimating how much untreated wastewater was being discharged. The new pipe leakage monitoring system will allow Kingston residents to make educated decisions about local water quality. According to Global News, the eventual goal of Kingston is to eliminate all combined storm and wastewater pipes.
