EPA Awards Grant to Train Teachers about Lower Potomac Watershed

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $24,769 environmental education grant to Earth Force Inc. of Alexandria, Va., to support a teacher training project concerning environmental issues in the lower Potomac watershed.

Under the program, Earth Force Inc. will partner with the Global Rivers Environmental Education Network to provide training to middle school teachers. The Arlington Public School district will provide expertise in academic standards, and identify teachers and schools to participate.

"This program will create valuable opportunities for middle school teachers to incorporate meaningful watershed experiences into the core curriculum and meet new standards of learning that require students to understand watershed concepts, habitats, and health," said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA's mid-Atlantic region.

Since 1992, EPA has provided almost $3 million annually in funding to local organizations and schools nationwide. These grants fund education programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
