CertainTeed Pipe Helps Palestinian Village Recover from Sewage Spill

Nov. 2, 2007

CertainTeed Certa-Lok Yelomine restrained joint polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe helped hundreds of residents in Um An-Nasir, a Bedouin village in the Gaza Strip, after a sewage reservoir collapsed in March 2007 and flooded the village, destroying more than 200 homes and killing five people.

Local distributor, Ortec Yelopipe Ltd., of Kibutz Urim, Israel and Mekorot, the Israel Water Agency decided to use 5,000 feet of Certa-Lok Yelomine 8" 125 psi high-impact PVC pipe to pump water out of the flooded village this past spring.

According to Ami Lamdan, General Manager for Ortec Yelopipe, Ltd., the pipe arrived in less than 24 hours and was able to be installed in about two days. “Because of the noxious smell of waste in the air, the crew worked quickly to save the village from further destruction and pollution,” he says. “The design of the Certa-Lok Yelomine pipe was a major benefit for this stressful and challenging project. It laid down quickly and required no solvent welding, butt fusion welding, bolting or specialty equipment to assemble.”

“I am pleased that our PVC pipe was able to help in such a devastating situation,” says Steve Gross, Director of Marketing & Product Development for CertainTeed Pipe & Plastics. “Every effort was taken to ensure the product would arrive quickly to help the residents pump the water out of their village in a few days time. The pipe’s durability and easily assembled joints made the project easier for everyone involved. Yelomine pipe is also used for agricultural irrigation and industrial applications in Israel.”

Certa-Lok Yelomine is manufactured from a specially formulated PVC compound that contains impact modifiers and UV inhibitors, which provide higher impact strength over an extended period of time. Its unique spline-locking design forms a full-strength joint instantly without the need for special heat-fusion equipment. The pipe and fittings are available in 2- to 16-inch diameters and pressure classes of 90 to 315 psi.
