Itron Inc. has shipped its 30 millionth automatic meter reading (AMR) module to the utility industry last week, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to help utilities worldwide streamline operations and provide the knowledge required to optimize the delivery and use of energy and water.

The 30 millionth AMR module, a small radio frequency (RF) device installed on an electric, gas or water meter that enables usage data to be collected remotely via wireless communications, left the shipping dock at Itron's manufacturing facility in Waseca, Minnesota, on June 7.

"When Itron pioneered and brought to market automatic meter reading systems in 1986, our utility customers embraced the technology primarily to reduce costs and improve efficiency in their meter reading operations," said LeRoy Nosbaum, chairman and CEO of Itron.

"Today, as we celebrate this significant milestone in Itron's history, it's very clear that our utility customers are viewing AMR technology, and the data it delivers, as an asset with enterprise-wide value," Nosbaum added. "We believe this expanded view of AMR's value will fuel continued strong growth not only in our core AMR systems, but in the Itron software applications that leverage the energy and water usage our AMR systems collect."
