Alabama Water System Manager Resigns Over Bonus

Jan. 11, 2005

In Alabama, a Limestone County water system official has stepped down, because his $15,000 bonus angered the county commission chairman.

Bobby Chandler resigned as manager of the county Water and Sewer Authority yesterday after receiving a controversial bonus in addition to his six-figure salary.

County commission chairman David Seibert said Chandler resigned in order to accept an out-of-state private sector job. Seibert has named assistant manager Greg Holland to serve as acting manager.

Last week, Seibert asked several board members to resign, saying the public has lost confidence in them because of the bonus they approved for Chandler along with $500 bonuses for each of the 46 employees.

Nancy Stevenson, the only director to vote against the bonuses, resigned from the board in late November.
