A Wheeling, W. Va., student has won the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, a prestigious international honor that recognizes the best high-school level research on water conservation and improvement.
Ashley Mulroy, who attends Linsly School, received the award for her research project titled "Correlating Residual Antibiotic Contamination in Public Water to the Drug Resistance of Escherichia Coli."
The Stockholm Junior Water Prize nominating committee cited Mulroy's work for "an outstanding contribution to the contemporary science of drinking water quality and microbial drug resistance." Patron HRH Princess Victoria of Sweden congratulated and presented Mulroy a crystal sculpture and a $5,000 scholarship award at the awards ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.
Now in its fourth year, the prize is sponsored annually by U.S.-based ITT Industries, Inc. Other finalists this year came from Australia, Argentina, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and Thailand.
