American Institute of Chemical Engineers Names New Board Members

The 2014 board includes both new & past members

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) announced that Otis Shelton, director of Praxair’s Corporate Safety and Environmental Services Assessment Program for Praxair facilities worldwide, will become president of the organization in 2014.

Shelton succeeds 2013 President Phillip R. Westmoreland, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and executive director of the NCSU Institute for Computational Science and Engineering.

President-elect Cheryl Teich joins Shelton on the board of directors. Teich will serve as AIChE President in 2014. She is a reaction engineering expertise leader in Dow Chemical’s Engineering Solutions Technology Center in Collegeville, Pa. Treasurer E. Dennis Griffith is another new addition to the AIChE board. He is a senior project manager at Granherne in Houston.

Newly-elected directors of the AIChE board are: Dan Lambert, fellow engineer at Savannah River National Lab in Aiken, S.C.; Joseph Smith, the Laufer Endowed Energy chair and director of the Energy Research and Development Center at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo.; Diane Spencer, a lead safety analyst at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif.; and Levi Thompson, the Richard E. Balzhiser Collegiate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. AIChE directors serve three-year terms.

Shelton, an AIChE fellow, previously served on the board of directors and as secretary. He is the outgoing chair of the Government Relations Committee, and a member of the Board of Trustees and the Minority Affairs Committee. Otis served 20 years on the National Advisory Board of the National Society of Black Engineers, and for five years on the National Research Council’s Committee on Chemical Demilitarization. He received his BS and MS in chemical engineering from the University of Houston.
