Westerhoff, Dee Elected to Lead Malcolm Pirnie, Inc.

The Board of Directors of Malcolm Pirnie, Inc., a national environmental consulting firm headquartered here, has elected Garret P. Westerhoff, P.E., DEE, to assume the position of chairman and chief executive officer and William P. Dee, P.E., DEE, to the position of president of the firm. Together they will be filling the roles and responsibilities held for over a decade by Dr. Paul L. Busch, P.E., DEE, who passed away July 27 at the age of 61.

Westerhoff, Executive Vice President of the firm since 1980 and long-time director of Malcolm Pirnie’s drinking water programs, is a leading national expert on water treatment systems, water resources planning and design of drinking water projects. A pioneer of innovative technologies, he led design of the nation’s first major installation of granular activated carbon treatment to remove a broad spectrum of organic contaminants from drinking water. With Malcolm Pirnie for 34 years, he spearheaded the regionalization of Pirnie operations to promote growth and geographic balance of the firm, and has played an active role in strategic planning and marketing programs.

A licensed Professional Engineer in 14 states and a Professional Planner in New Jersey, Westerhoff holds BS and MS degrees in engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, is an Honorary Member of the American Water Works Association, and is actively involved in leadership roles in numerous professional societies. He is a prolific author with numerous published articles, and has recently authored a major text for drinking water utilities, "The Changing Water Utility: Creative Approaches to Effectiveness and Efficiency," published by American Water Works Association.

Dee, a Vice President of the firm since 1986, has over 29 years experience in the planning and execution of environmental engineering projects, including numerous major wastewater treatment projects, and an array of water supply, solid and industrial waste management and hazardous waste remediation efforts. Currently a director of the firm and a member of its Executive Group, he is responsible for regional operations on a firmwide basis.

Dee holds a BS in Civil Engineering and a ME in Environmental Engineering, both from Manhattan College. He completed the Harvard University Advanced Management Program, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in seven states. A Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Chairman of the AAEE National Excellence in Environmental Engineering Awards Committee, he is also a member of several other professional organizations including the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation.

Malcolm Pirnie, a century-old firm of independent environmental engineers, scientists and consultants, maintains a staff of over 1,100 in more than 40 offices nationwide, and provides comprehensive environmental services for drinking water, wastewater treatment, solid and hazardous waste management, and air quality control, as well as performance enhancement consulting services for utilities and industry.
