North American Fracking Water Treatment Market to Increase

June 4, 2014
According to a new report, the market is expected to grow to $350 million by 2018

BCC Research reveals in its new report, "Fracking Water Treatment: The North American Market," the North American market for wastewater treatment equipment for hydraulically fractured gas and oil wells is expected to grow to $350 million by 2018, with a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.1%. The hydrofracted oil well market, the fastest growing segment overall, is growing at a significant 11.2% CAGR.

The North American produced water treatment market is the world’s largest. Equipment sales for equipment used to treat wastewater from fracking operations as well as conventional wells reached $889 million in 2013. Sales into the fracking market alone make up approximately 24% of the total, or $216 million in 2013.

Hydraulically fractured gas wells, the largest segment of the hydrofracture market, is expected to grow to $248 million by 2018, registering a CAGR of 9.7%.

However, the hydraulically fractured oil well segment, valued at just $60 million in 2013, is growing more rapidly than the market as a whole and is expected to jump to $102 million in 2018.

“The desire to treat produced water to a level suitable for beneficial reuse (other than reinjection) plays an increasing role in market growth,” says BCC Research membrane and separation technology analyst Susan Hanft. “Currently, some reuse applications are limited by the cost to treat the highly saline waters to potable quality and the logistics of transporting the water to potential end users. Initial equipment sales into this sector are at wells located in water scarce areas where alternative disposal options are limited and/or have stringent regulatory standards.”

Fracking Water Treatment: The North American Market provides an overview of the North American hydrofracturing water treatment market, including market size estimates and forecasts for developing markets for fracking water treatment technologies through 2018. It focuses on the developing North American market for hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced water treatment equipment for the oil and gas industry. The market is broken down by several different parameters, including country, equipment type and wastewater source. The study covers the industry in the U.S., Canada and Mexico in terms of the manufacture and deployment of treatment systems. In addition, government roles in support of global markets, including regulatory support, government requirements and promotional incentives for various technologies as relevant and available, are examined.
