Mark S. Smith joined American Water in 2008

American Water announced that vice president and chief information officer Mark S. Smith was selected as one of ExecRank’s Top Chief Information Officers for 2014. These rankings are based on statistical and algorithmic analysis of executive and company performance and are the result of over three years of research and feedback from evaluation committees and top chief information officers.

Smith joined American Water in 2008 and brings 30 years of experience in the development, implementation, and support of IT solutions. Appointed to his current position in September 2012, Smith is responsible for all aspects of information technology service (ITS) delivery and management. His strategic focus for the ITS organization is one based on developing internal business partnerships, establishing a service oriented culture, and optimizing (and making more transparent) IT costs.

Smith is actively involved in community efforts and serves as vice chairman on the board of directors for Touch New Jersey Inc. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computers and information systems from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. and currently resides in Downingtown, Pa.

Additionally, Smith was selected as one of Computerworld's Premier 100 IT Leaders for 2013, which spotlights leaders from both the technology and business sides of companies for their exceptional technology leadership, innovative solutions to business challenges and effectively managed IT strategies.

ExecRank screened more than 10,000 chief information officers in the U.S. Only the best are awarded the distinction of being a part of ExecRank’s Top Chief Information Officers Ranking for 2014. As always, there was a premium on experience and track record when considering the rankings, but also on chief information officers who are making IT a strategic focal point at the board level. In addition, ExecRank weighed heavily the recommendations provided by the CEOs of the finalists.
