Severn Trent Services Introduces a Precision Dosing System to Feed Sodium Hypochlorite

July 23, 2004
System Targets the Increasing Number of Water and Wastewater Facilities Switching from Chlorine Gas to Sodium Hypochlorite Disinfection

Severn Trent Services has introduced the new PDS (TM) (Precision Dosing System) Series H, a pre-assembled and pre-wired packaged system specifically designed for efficient and precise injections of sodium hypochlorite for the disinfection of water and wastewater. Sodium hypochlorite is increasingly used as an alternative to traditional chlorine gas disinfection. The PDS Series H is the latest addition to the company's line of chemical dosing equipment.

While chlorine remains the most common disinfectant used in water and wastewater treatment systems throughout the world, sodium hypochlorite is increasingly used in these applications due to safety concerns associated with the use, storage and transportation of chlorine gas. Severn Trent Services is among the world leaders in the manufacture of feed systems for sodium hypochlorite, which is commonly found either in bulk form or is generated on-site at the water treatment facility.

The new PDS Series H incorporates an automatic de-gas vent valve, designed for use with chemicals, like sodium hypochlorite, that off-gas. The valve automatically vents gas from the pump head, improving pump efficiency and extending pump diaphragm life. In addition to the de-gas vent valve, a standard PDS Series H system includes a hydraulically balanced disc diaphragm metering pump, calibration column, pressure relief valve with by-pass back to suction, back pressure valve, pulsation dampener and control panel.

The system features corrosion-resistant materials for all wetted components in the single and multiple-pump system arrangement. Each system includes a fully integrated control system, which automates system operation, alarm indication and system shutdown in the event of loss of flow, high pressure or metering pump failure. Alarms for remote tank, low level and tank mixer failure and remote shutdown are optional. A flow proportioning control and an auto switchover for multi-pump systems are also available.

Severn Trent Services, based in Fort Washington, Pa., is a leading supplier of water and wastewater treatment solutions. The company's broad range of products and services is concentrated around disinfection and filtration technologies, pipeline analysis, rehabilitation and repair services, contract operating services, and state-of-the-art residential metering products.
