Russian Water Treatment Explosion Kills 2

Sept. 18, 2006

An explosion at a sewage plant outside of Moscow killed two people and left 12 others injured.

The Emergency Situations Ministry told the Hindustan Times that one person is also still missing.

The blast occurred in the town of Pavshino, about 3 miles outside of Moscow’s western periphery. Authorities attribute the explosion to a build-up of explosive gas.

Natalia Lukash, spokeswoman for Emergency Situations Ministry, said that terrorism has been ruled out as a possible cause for the incident.

The explosion caved in the roof of the three-story building and shattered windows in houses nearby. The town of Pavshino was left without water.

Four people who lived near the plant were hospitalized along with the injured shift workers.
