New standards update criteria for pollutants and protect 3,200 miles of streams

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved revised Nebraska water quality standards to support recreational activities and the protection of aquatic life. The approved water quality standards include updated criteria for several pollutants and protection of more than 3,200 miles of streams for recreation.

"EPA appreciates Nebraska’s ongoing efforts to revise its water quality standards. The work done by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality will further protect the waters of the state," said William Rice, acting regional administrator.

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality submitted new and revised Nebraska surface water quality standards to EPA for review and approval, as required by the Clean Water Act. EPA’s Sept. 30, 2009, decision letter provides a more detailed description of EPA’s review and the basis for this action. The decision letter is available at www.epa.gov/region07/news_events/legal.
