WERF Awards Contracts to Continue Nutrient Research

The contracts build upon Brown & Caldwell's current nutrient research

The Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) awarded two contracts to Brown and Caldwell that build upon its current nutrient research.

The first contract is for a project titled “Model Guidance for Developing Site Specific Nutrient Goals – Demonstration, Boulder Creek, Colorado (LINK 2T14).” The research team is using available monitoring data for Boulder Creek to evaluate potential nutrient management scenarios using WERF’s guidance for developing waterbody-specific nutrient goals. The project will demonstrate the viability of WERF’s method for setting waterbody-specific nutrient targets in Colorado, and identify key results that can be transferred to other locations in Colorado and nationwide.

The second project, “Nutrient Recovery through Urine Separation (NTRY10T15),” is a part of WERF’s research through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Center for Resource Recovery and Nutrient Management. The Brown and Caldwell team is working with Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) to plan and implement urine collection and storage systems, conduct field and lab-based experiments addressing scale and odor issues associated with urine collection and storage, and construction of a struvite pilot plant at HRSD.
