The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) announced that the Stormwater Management Program Draft Annual Report is available for public review. The report covers actions that the NYSDOT is taking to control stormwater discharges. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) regulations require NYSDOT to issue the report each year.
The report includes information on six minimum control measures NYSDOT is taking to manage stormwater runoff. These include, educating the public on the impacts of stormwater discharges on water bodies and the steps that the public can take to reduce pollutants in stormwater runoff; informing the public on what steps NYSDOT has taken to protect water quality and what steps it plans to take in the future; information on construction practices that help prevent erosion; information on post-construction planning and practices; procedures for locating, tracing and removing illicit discharge sites; and pollution prevention and good housekeeping to prevent or reduce pollutant runoff from municipal operations.
This includes employee training to prevent and reduce stormwater pollution from activities such as fleet and building maintenance, new construction and land disturbances, and storm water system maintenance.
The annual report is a requirement of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation State Pollution Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) general permit for stormwater discharges from municipal separate storm sewer systems. NYSDOT is making this draft document available for public comment until June 3, 2005. Comments about measures NYSDOT has taken and should take in the future regarding stormwater management will be considered.
Copies of the Draft Annual Report can be obtained by contacting the NYSDOT Environmental Analysis Bureau by mail at POD 41, 50 Wolf Road, Albany, NY 12232, or by phone at 518/457-5672. Printed copies of the Annual Report will also be available for review at all eleven regional NYSDOT offices.
In addition, the Annual Report is available on the NYSDOT Stormwater Management webpage during the comment period at: http://www.dot.state.ny.us/eab/stormwater.html.
