Siemens Water Technologies recently teamed up with its sister company, Siemens Pakistan, to provide Packages Limited with a second wastewater treatment system for its new Bulleh Shah Paper Mill Project in Kasur, Pakistan. The orders consist of two circular primary clarifiers and two secondary clarifiers, as well as floating surface aerators and spray coolers for the paper company’s biological wastewater treatment facility. Siemens Pakistan will provide service and maintenance.
One of Pakistan’s leading manufacturers of high-quality paper, paperboard and packaging products for the consumer industry, Packages Limited developed a new straw-based pulping technology with which it hopes to promote greater environmental sustainability in wood-strapped countries. The new paper factory is located in Kasur, about 70 km from Packages Limited’s existing plant in Lahore. The company expects the Bulleh Shah Paper Mill Project to also help improve its operating efficiency, product quality and overall environmental performance.
Part of the key to the plant’s success is its biological wastewater treatment systems. The 32-m high-performance Rim-Flo/Tow-Bro secondary clarifiers, for instance, saved significant civil and concrete costs when compared with conventional clarifiers. Similarly, the Aqua-Lator floating spray coolers served as an economic alternative to cooling towers, increasing heat transfer and lowering the temperature of the wastewater prior to secondary treatment.
Baljinder Sandhu, project director at Packages Limited, adds that his company liked dealing with a single supplier. “It was nice to have one point of contact instead of several,” he said. “It was also nice that Siemens could offer field service through its local offices for inspection of installation and maintenance training of our personnel. This minimized our cost and offered peace of mind.”
Packages Limited anticipates its entire biological wastewater treatment facility will be up and running by July 2006.
