Power Outage Leads To Wastewater Bypass

Aug. 9, 2006

A power outage in Fairfield, Iowa, caused a bypass of 10,000 gallons of wastewater.

Kenneth Goering, the Fairfield Wastewater Superintendent, told KTVO that the city is working to eliminate the need for a bypass. However, Goering did expres that sending the untreated water into the environment is better than it ending up in a basement somewhere.

Power was restored about an hour after the outage. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources speculates that rain diluted the wastewater enough so that animals in the stream where the water was sent will not be affected.

Goering also told KTVO that he would like to eventually set up a diesel generator at the lift station so that this type of incident will not have to occur again.
