Peter Cook, Executive Director of the National Association of Water Companies, Passes Away

May 1, 2009

Cook served as executive director for 13 years

Donald L. Correll, president and chief executive officer of American Water and president of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) Board of Directors, issued the following statement regarding the passing of Peter Cook, executive director of NAWC:

"It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Peter Cook, executive director of NAWC. As some of you may know, Peter spent the past four years valiantly fighting lung cancer. He passed away on April 28, 2009.

“During his 13 years as executive director of NAWC, Peter committed himself fully to our Association, its values and membership. Without his leadership, NAWC simply would not be the organization that it is today. He brought a deep institutional knowledge of the industry, the inner workings of Washington and a passion for success that will remain with NAWC for a very long time. Peter’s work was dedicated to better our industry and making sure that the work we do is understood and valued.

“Prior to NAWC, Peter served as the deputy director for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water. He also spent six years helping to oversee the construction of the Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System, a $30 billion gas pipeline project to bring natural gas from the North Slope to the lower 48 states.

“I know I speak for all when I say that Peter will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Sharon, who has become a friend to many of us in the past years, and also with his daughters Heather and Leah and his entire family.

“Peter’s funeral will be Monday, May 4. Contact the NAWC at 202.833.8383 for details.”

Donations in Peter’s memory can be made to Water for People.
