Oil Slick In Sydney's Bay Linked to Storm Water Drain
An oil slick has been found in Sydney’s historic Botany Bay. The origin of the oil has not been determined, but the diesel was traced to a storm water drain.
Officials told The Sydney Morning Herald that they have not determined how the oil entered the pipe. The New South Wales Department of Conservation and Rockdale Council are investigating the spill.
Nearby residents have noted that the water has appeared polluted over the past two weeks, as the oil hangs around the water.
Cate Faehrmann, director of the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, told The Sydney Morning Herald that this type of environmental vandalism could have a devastating impact on the birds and marine life in the bay.
