According to an article in The Chicago Tribune, Representatives from the Army Corps of Engineers, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the DuPage County Health Department gathered in Naperville, Ill., to assure residents near Nike Park that their drinking water is safe.
Samples from the water met all of the standards, leaving no reason for any restrictions, although the Illinois Evironmental Protection Agency will continue to monitor the site.
Officials became concerned about the 42-acre, former Nike surface-to-air missile site, in 1988.
"There are 151 formerly used defense sites in Illinois, and we've looked at all of them to determine if they need to be cleaned up," said Walter Perro, who was visiting Naperville from the Army Corps' Louisville district. "One of the problems with a lot of these sites is that it's hard to determine who is responsible for the cleanup. A lot of developers have come in after the fact."Although the site passed a preliminary assessment in 1988, it revealed that samples should be taken again at some point. Traces of the solvent trichloroethene were found in 1996 but no contamination is currently detected.
