NUCA Foundation Grants Target Industry Recruitment and Safety

Nov. 22, 2002
For the second straight year, the NUCA Foundation for Education and Research has awarded grants to NUCA chapters in support of education and training projects that benefit the utility construction industry. The NUCA Foundation awarded four grants this year totaling $8,500, including two grants to the Georgia Utility Contractors Association, and one each to the Suncoast Utility Contractors Association and the Mid Florida Utilities & Transportation Contractors Association. The projects selected by the NUCA Foundation target industry recruitment, image, and safety.

"I am very pleased by the chapter involvement in this grant program," said Richard L. Foster, chair of the NUCA Foundation for Education and Research. "We received many outstanding applications, and the ones selected will advance the goals of the NUCA Foundation."

The Georgia Utility Contractors Association (GUCA) received one grant for $1,000 to convert an existing "New Employee Safety Orientation" audio tape (English and Spanish) to CD-ROM format for free distribution to all chapter members. The original safety orientation training tape, which was developed by safety professionals, covers 13 basic safety topics and can be used as a refresher tool or during the hiring process. The new CD-ROM will also be made available to the NUCA Foundation for distribution to NUCA members nationwide.

The second grant to GUCA, in the amount of $2,500, will be used to establish a Student Chapter Fund that will send student chapter officers to NUCA Conventions and the state

chapter’s annual conference. In 2001, the NUCA Foundation awarded GUCA a grant to establish local student/NUCA chapters at schools with construction education programs. A new student chapter at Dekalb Tech has successfully completed the charter process.

Both the Suncoast Utility Contractors Association (SUCA) and the Mid Florida Utilities & Transportation Contractors Association received grants for $2,500 to support construction career day programs for high school and technical college students. Local construction associations and Florida’s state highway department sponsor the annual events, which bring thousands of students to local fairgrounds to explore job opportunities in the field of construction.

The NUCA Foundation for Education and Research, based in Arlington, Va., is the education and independent research arm of the National Utility Contractors Association, which represents companies that build water, wastewater, gas, electric, communications, and related facilities. The NUCA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization
