MWH Soft Ships Groundbreaking Treatment Plant Hydraulic Analysis Textbook

July 11, 2005

MWH Soft, a global provider of environmental and water resources applications software, announced the release of Comprehensive Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Hydraulics Handbook for Engineers and Operators—a resource for anyone involved in the analysis, design and operation of water and wastewater treatment plants. An understanding of hydraulic fundamentals is vital in ensuring that plants operate properly and provide the desired level of treatment. This new textbook covers the critical information students, professional engineers, plant managers and operators need to master the hydraulic design of reliable water and wastewater treatment facilities.

Written by industry experts, the book covers not only theoretical scientific foundations, but also advanced treatment technological issues featuring real-world components and situations in treatment plant design. Each segment is supported by extensive exercises. The book also includes more than 100 worked-out example problems that can be directly applied to engineering practice. Once these fundamentals are understood, they can readily be adapted to any treatment plant in any particular situation—giving engineers the confidence to solve their own hydraulic design problems.

Chapter-by-chapter coverage includes: reviews of treatment systems; types of treatment systems; the regulatory framework; major plant components; fundamental aspects of plant analysis; pressurized pipe flow; open channel flow; flow measurement and control; and pumping systems. Also addressed are hydraulic design considerations including: plant location and layout; capacity management; source water and influent characterization; impacts of water quality objectives; intake and outfall structures; sludge pumping and handling; and hydraulic profiling. Extensive attention is given to treatment technologies, including: coagulation, filtration and filter backwash systems; disinfection and residuals management; aeration and air stripping; dissolved solids and chemical precipitation; and membrane systems (with focus on hydraulic characterization, head requirements, and evaluation of losses within each unit process).

"Another excellent book from MWH Soft," said Jeffrey Pecenka, PE, supervising engineer for the Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities in Wyoming. "Comprehensive Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Hydraulics Handbook for Engineers and Operators is a practical, informative, working engineering reference that covers the principles of proper hydraulic design and characterization of treatment plant facilities for improved performance and reliability."

"Exceptionally practical and comprehensive," said Tony Akel, PE, manager of Infrastructure Master Planning at Carollo Engineers in California. "Its 'to the point' style provides a clear roadmap for grasping and mastering the principles and concepts of treatment plant hydraulics. This is a must read for new engineers and a valuable reference for our professionals."

"Because the hydraulic design of water and wastewater treatment plants rarely receives adequate coverage in undergraduate and graduate engineering curricula, many practicing engineers are not familiar with or proficient in the hydraulic design of these important facilities," said Paul F. Boulos, Ph.D., president and chief operating officer of MWH Soft and an author of the book. "This volume provides comprehensive coverage of treatment plant hydraulic fundamentals. It's filled with solved problems and practical guidance to help industry professionals design, maintain and operate safe reliable treatment facilities and continue to earn the public trust. By combining theory with hands-on hydraulic design applications, we are seeking to provide an enriching and complete educational experience, even to readers new to the water and wastewater industry."
