Grant from The Joyce Foundation will help develop projects to improve water quality in area watersheds

A group of organizations committed to improving water quality in the Milwaukee River basin has received a $1.9 million, three-year grant from The Joyce Foundation of Chicago, The Business Journal of Milwaukee reported.

Seven environmental groups and the Southeastern Wisconsin Watersheds Trust will receive funding to develop projects aimed at improving water quality, habitat and the health and economy of communities in Milwaukee-area watersheds. The Menomonee and Kinnickinnic River watersheds are first in line.

"This investment provides enormous momentum toward making measurable improvements in our water quality," said Pat Marchese, chairman of the executive steering council of the Southeastern Wisconsin Watersheds Trust. "The grant will enable the trust and its environmental partners to work collaboratively to build community support for implementing cost effective water quality improvement projects in the greater Milwaukee Watersheds."

In addition to the trust, environmental partners receiving funding are: 1000 Friends of Wisconsin, Clean Wisconsin, Midwest Environmental Advocates, Milwaukee RiverKeeper, River Alliance of Wisconsin, River Revitalization Foundation and Sixteenth Street Community Health Center.
