MACTEC Engineering & Consulting (MACTEC E&C) has appointed Robert R. Abbott, Ph.D., as senior principal environmental biologist. Bruce C. Coles, president of MACTEC E&C and chairman & CEO of MACTEC, Inc., the holding company, made the announcement. Abbott is based in the firm’s Oakland, Calif. office.
According to Richard Manser, who heads up San Francisco Bay Area operations for MACTEC, Abbott is building a biology team to provide biological services for MACTEC clients throughout the western U.S. Next month, Abbott will supervise a team to build three oyster reefs in San Pablo Bay and monitor how fish, eel grass, exotic species and recreational anglers utilize this new habitat, located about 20 miles north of San Francisco.
“Robert brings to MACTEC more than 30 years experience in performing assessments of fisheries and aquatic resource information for government agencies and the private sector,” Manser said. “He has managed large teams of scientists and field technicians in designing monitoring programs, collecting field data and analyzing model outputs and databases.”
Abbott is a nationally recognized authority on San Francisco Bay and Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta fisheries issues, and is an expert in threatened and endangered species of fish, dam removal permits, underwater explosive and pile driving impacts on fish, and aquatic pest control.
Abbott has evaluated potential impacts to aquatic resources in San Francisco Bay due to the proposed expansion of the San Francisco International Airport. He conducted an assessment of the potential impacts to coastal fish populations in Santa Monica Bay due to entrainment and impingement for a proposed seawater cooled power plant. In addition, Abbott has conducted aquatic resource sampling by beach seine, fish trap, plankton trawls, and water quality monitoring in shallow water habitat in San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay.
Abbott received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from California Western University, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in fisheries from the University of Washington. He is a member of the Fisheries and Hydroacoustics Working Group, Caltrans, District 4; Bay Area Modeling Forum; American Fisheries Society; and the Pile Driving Contractors Association.
