Liquatec Wins Intellectual Property Battle

Aug. 31, 2006

In a long battle over intellectual property rights in Brazil, Liquatec Products, a manufacturer of quality water filtration components, won an important battle to stop the use of the name Liquatec in a foreign country.

In a business world where lines that divide countries have practically vanished due to ease of communications and the Internet, it is becoming more and more difficult for companies to protect their intellectual property rights, which directly impact the appropriation of their name, trademarks and salesmarks.

After a lengthy process, which included hiring a prestigious law firm in Brazil that handles intellectual property, trademarks and patents, Liquatec Products won a significant battle.

“It is not only a question of intellectual property rights, It’s a question of protecting our distributors,” said Rodney Carmer, vice president of sales. “We were persistent in our efforts, and we held our ground, even when we were asked by the infringing party to pay them a monetary compensation in order to release the Liquatec name.”

Liquatec Products, through diligence and persistence, has now retained the rights of the Liquatec name in Brazil, has registered the name in the Brazilian registry and has gained rights to the Liquatec Brazil domain name.

Intellectual property infringement is an issue that will not go away, and as suggested by Liquatec, must be paid close attention to if you want to protect your company and your regional distributors.
