KMK, Black & Veatch Awarded Top Honor for Treatment Plant Upgrade

July 31, 2007

Black & Veatch announced that the project team of KMK Consultants Limited and Black & Veatch earned the prestigious Willis Chipman Award from Consulting Engineers of Ontario for its role in the upgrade and expansion of the Lakeview Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) for the Region of Peel. The successful project enables the 46-year-old plant to efficiently meet the region’s wastewater treatment requirements and public acceptance goals until 2031.

KMK led the team that provided detailed design, tendering, contract administration and site services to enhance plant performance and increase capacity of the plant, located on the shore of Lake Ontario in Mississauga. Wastewater treatment and solids handling improvements have effectively solved problems and distinguished the Lakeview WWTP as the largest fluidized bed biosolids incineration facility in the world.

According to Mark Schiller, Peel Region director, water and wastewater treatment, the strategic alliance of the Local Service-Global Expertise team proved successful in evaluation, selection and application of appropriate technology, as well as management of a fast-track project that presented many challenges.

“This project and the planning that preceded it have brought out the best in everyone,” Schiller said. “Best project management and wastewater treatment practices came together in the Lakeview WWTP expansion and upgrade to improve the performance and operations of the wastewater treatment plant and quality of life for the people in this region.”

The Willis Chipman Award is the highest distinction in Ontario’s consulting engineering community. It recognizes the project that best demonstrates the valuable contribution that consulting engineers make to the social, economic and environmental quality of life in the province.
