The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) sent a letter to Dr. Lester Crawford in support of his White House nomination to serve as Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Bottled water is stringently regulated by FDA as a packaged food product.
In his letter, IBWA President and CEO Joseph K. Doss wrote, "Your experience as Acting Commissioner of FDA and your understanding of the food, drug, device, and cosmetic issues make you a very highly qualified candidate to lead FDA in meeting the many challenges facing the agency."
FDA has been diligent in ensuring the safety and security of food products for consumers in the U.S. IBWA complimented FDA efforts to address the threat of bioterrorism on the nation’s food supply and implementation of the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002 (the Bioterrorism Act).
"Under his leadership," Doss wrote, "FDA is directly addressing the security of the nation’s food supply. Working with the food industry, this partnership is an excellent example of the public and private sectors working cooperatively on an issue of critical national importance. IBWA believes that, as Commissioner of FDA, you will further this new paradigm to help secure our nation’s food supply."
