HMM Works with WSSC to Protect Pipelines
The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission selected Hatch Mott Mac Donald, Infrastructure & Environment to provide engineering services for the Potomac Hydropneumatic Surge Tanks project. The WSSC provides water and sewer service to an area of 1,000 sq miles, housing a population of over 1.6 million.
HMM recently signed a contract to include the modeling, design and permitting of hydropneumatic surge tanks to provide protection of the WSSC Main Zone pipelines at the 250 million gallon per day Potomac Water Treatment Plant. The surge tanks will protect the pipelines from the extreme high and low pressures that can result from power outages at the high lift pump station. It is anticipated that the final design will include two or more above-ground spherical, pressurized tanks. These tanks will be among the largest capacity tanks of their type installed in any water system nationwide.
