Haestad Methods Leads the Nation to Safer Water with RAM-W(SM) Training

Haestad Methods Makes Vulnerability Assessment Training Its Number One Priority

Haestad Methods has launched of the nation's first round of training for Risk Assessment Methodology for Water Utilities (RAM-W) in support of the United States' Homeland Security initiative.

RAM-W training, developed by Sandia National Laboratories and the AWWA Research Foundation, provides water utilities with the tools to safeguard our nation's water supplies against terrorist attacks and contamination.

Licensed by Sandia, Haestad Methods' water security experts are teaching water professionals how to conduct vulnerability assessments, develop emergency response plans and upgrade existing security at water facilities to meet the guidelines provided in the EPA's Security Planning Grant. This and other federal funding is now available to assist public water systems to conduct vulnerability assessments and make infrastructure improvements needed to protect public health.

Many prominent organizations and consulting firms participated in Haestad Methods' inaugural RAM-W training session given in Baltimore, Md., on May 14. These included Killam Associates; Boyle Engineering Corporation; Environmental Risk Limited; Jackson Energy Authority; Rummel, Klepper & Kahl; Tetra Tech EM; Westin Solutions; Greeley and Hansen; FMSM Engineers; Steven G. Lowry & Associates; Science Applications International Corporation; and The University of Tennessee Municipal Technical Advisory Service.

"Now is the time for water utilities to begin vulnerability assessments," said Niclas Ingemarsson, executive vice president for Haestad Methods. "Legislation approved last week requires water utilities to prepare vulnerability assessments by March 2003. Since time is of the essence, Haestad Methods is making RAM-W training its number one priority. We plan to conduct two courses a month in different locations across the country."

This 3-day seminar is a comprehensive program that covers the methodology and tools included in RAM-W training. Small group breakout sessions provide attendees with the opportunity to discuss individual concerns and experiences. The training format includes presentations and discussions, interactive exercises, and case studies/input from industry experts.
