Event highlights south Los Angeles county water challenges

Community members and local leaders gathered in Los Angeles for the Water Replenishment District of Southern California's (WRD) Groundwater 101 forum with guest speaker Congresswoman Maxine Waters. Designed to educate the public on California's water challenges, the WRD Groundwater 101 forums are held in each of the district's five divisions throughout its large service area in an effort to make information more accessible to the general public.

"Today's Groundwater 101 Forum is another outreach effort by WRD to engage our community in water education and water conservation measures," stated Willard H. Murray, WRD Division One director representing the cities of Inglewood and Hawthorne, as well as the communities of unincorporated Del Aire, Ladera Heights, Lennox, West Compton, Westmont, Willowbrook and View Park – Windsor Hills.

WRD General Manager Robb Whitaker kicked off the event by highlighting the state's unprecedented challenges to supply water to the region and ways WRD is working to address these challenges through its innovative programs and projects.

Congresswoman Waters then delivered remarks on water and environmental issues. She touched upon the importance of water conservation and the need to find alternative local water supplies.

"Congresswoman Waters is a fierce advocate who has protected the interests of the people of south Los Angeles," noted Murray. "I am pleased that she recognizes the importance of engaging our mutual constituents on a matter that is vitally critical to our lives and our economy."
