Over 1,000 gallons of gasoline spilled from an overfilled tank during a delivery at a service station in White Plains, N.Y., and some of the gas ended up in the Bronx River.
Newsday.com reported that floating barriers were placed in the river as far as 2 1/2 miles south of the spill, after gasoline was detected in the river in Scarsdale.
A spokesman for the county’s emergency services, David Novich, could not confirm the amount of gasoline that reached the river, but did see a sheen on the surface of the water.
Hazardous materials workers from White Plains and Westchester county were dispatched to work on cleaning up the spill.
The spill affected traffic throughout White Plains during the morning rush hour. Some streets remained closed into the afternoon.
Deputy police commissioner Daniel Jackson told Newsday.com that a tanker truck was making a delivery at a Citgo station, when gas started to spill out of a tall venting pipe.
It was Paul Franzese, the owner of a printing company next door that noticed the gas spewing out of the pipe. An inch of gas was left on the company’s flat roof. It is not known if it was a human or mechanical error that caused the spill.
