First O.C. Water Camp Held in Summer 2007

Aug. 16, 2007

This summer, several water, wastewater, and local government agencies in Orange County, Calif., co-sponsored the first O.C. Water Camp, an interactive, week-long water education program for Orange County students, ages 12 to 15, who are interested in science and the environment.

During Water Camp, 19 students visited state-of-the-art laboratories, took behind-the-scenes tours of wetlands and treatment facilities, and talked one-on-one with industry professionals and university professors.

Hands-on activities and lessons included presentations about safeguarding the aquatic environment; environmental crime scene detective work; testing groundwater from local wells for chlorine, turbidity, and pH.; and sampling ocean water for indicator bacteria.

O.C. Water Camp was held to help students gain a better understanding of our water resources, where they come from, and what it takes to move water in and out of the community, as well as introduce students to career paths in water-related fields.
