Federal, State Agencies Announce Study to Clean Up and Revitalize Lower Passaic River

The Lower Passaic River Restoration Project, a study to cleanup and restore the Lower Passaic River, will be announced in a joint press conference on Monday, Oct. 20, 2003 by federal and state agencies. The press conference will take place at the Newark Fire Training Facility starting at 11:00 a.m.

The landmark partnership involves the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).

Key Speakers include:

-- Congressional Representatives Menendez, Frelinghuysen, and Pascrell
-- Agency Leaders Jane Kenny (EPA), Col. John B. O'Dowd (US Army Corps of Engineers), Commissioner Bradley Campbell (NJDEP), Rick Gimello (NJDOT)
-- Additional stakeholders and elected officials

This 17-mile stretch of the Lower Passaic River is a highly industrialized and commercialized area and has a long history of degraded water quality, sediment contamination, loss of wetlands, and abandoned or underutilized properties along its shores.
