EPA Names Two Illinois Treatment Plants Among Best-operated in 2005

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has named two Illinois wastewater treatment plants among the best-operated in the six-state region.

The Wheaton Sanitary District and the Rushville Wastewater Treatment Plant are two of nine plants to receive EPA 2005 Regional Operation and Maintenance Awards.

The Wheaton plant serves about 58,000 people in Wheaton and nearby communities of Winfield, Glen Ellyn and Carol Stream. It earned the recognition for consistently removing 99 percent of chemicals and 90 percent of ammonia from incoming wastewater. The Wheaton Sanitary District is managed by Robert L. Clavel, engineer-manager.

EPA Water Division officials Peter Swenson and Russell Martin will present the award at noon Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the treatment facility, 1S 649 Shaffner Road, Wheaton.

The Rushville plant serves 3,300 people and earned the recognition for consistently removing an average of 95 percent of the pollutants from the incoming wastewater. The Rushville facility is managed by Drew Seal, wastewater superintendent.

EPA Water Division official David Stoltenberg will present the award at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in City Hall, 220 W. Washington St. in Rushville. EPA Region 5 includes Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin.
