EPA Names Director of Resources Management and Administration for Research and Development

Jack Puzak has been named director of resources management and administration for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development.

“Jack Puzak has been a leader in EPA science management since 1982, and with more than 34 years of service in research and development, brings the experience and skills to make a positive contribution to this organization,” said E. Timothy Oppelt, acting assistant administrator of the Office of Research and Development (ORD).

Puzak previously served as director of the National Center for Environmental Research, overseeing competitive grants and fellowships programs designed to support and encourage the nation’s best scientists and engineers to conduct environmental research in concert with the EPA. He also directed research laboratories in Research Triangle Park, N.C. and in Duluth, Minn.

Puzak received his bachelor’s in chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University in 1966, and a master’s in chemistry from Duke University in 1974. He earned a master’s in business administration from the University of North Carolina in1989. He is an active member of the American Chemical Society and ASTM International, a standards development organization.

As head of resources management and administration for the research arm of EPA, Puzak oversees a $600 million budget,1,900 employees, and 13 research facilities strategically located across the country to conduct the science needed by EPA to make informed decisions on environmental issues. He directs resource management, facilities management, and human resources and personnel management, among other administrative responsibilities.
