EPA Engineer Receives National Award
Steven C. McCutcheon, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE a senior environmental engineer with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Exposure Research Laboratory, will be awarded the 2004 Government Civil Engineer of the Year Award by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
The award recognizes a distinguished civil engineer employed in public service for his/her significant contribution to the engineering profession.
McCutcheon has worked in federal research and development for 18 years, and is a pioneer and internationally known expert in the field of phytoremediation - using plants for waste management - ecological engineering, water quality, watershed hydrology, hydrodynamics, sediment transport, toxic organic chemicals and metals cleanup, and environmental planning.
He is a national expert on erosion and sediment control, and has authored, co-authored and edited more than 225 articles, papers, books and reports, including Water Quality Modeling, Vol. I, Hydrodynamics and Transport for Water Quality Modeling and Phytoremediation: Transformation and Control of Contaminants. McCutcheon served as the editor of ASCE's Journal of Environmental Engineering.
As president-elect of ASCE's Georgia Section, McCutcheon has served on many advisory boards including the Florida Bay Science Oversight Panel, which advises non-government groups and federal and state agencies on investigations to protect the bay. McCutcheon speaks to school groups about ecological engineering to encourage students to enter the engineering and science fields, and has mentored several doctorate engineering candidates.
McCutcheon has received many technical awards, including the 1999 EPA Science and Technology Achievement Award Level III, and the Georgia Engineering Alliance's 2004 Engineer of the Year in Government.
McCutcheon will be presented with his award at the CEO Forum/Leadership and Management Luncheon being held during ASCE's Annual Conference and Exposition on Friday, October 22, 2004.
