Engelhard Technology Enables Lead Removal in Japanese Water Filters

April 9, 2003

New water filters featuring Engelhard Corporation lead-removal technology have been certified by the Japanese government to meet their performance criteria and are now available to Japanese consumers concerned about the quality of their drinking water.

Engelhard's ATS(TM) filter media, which can be used in all types of water filters, generally remove lead to non-detectable levels in typical applications. ATS products have been leading lead-removal products in the United States for a decade.

Now the technology is available to Japanese consumers who are facing a new, lower standard for lead in drinking water. ATS is being used in products supplied by all major Japanese water filter makers.

The new standard, which took effect April 1, is five-times lower than the previous standard and, according to the Japanese government, is likely to be exceeded in millions of households nationwide. That is because drinking water to more than 8.5 million Japanese homes is still being supplied by lead water pipes from which the harmful metal can seep into the water supply.

Lead has been linked to mental impairment and other adverse health effects, especially in children. The surest way to make sure Japanese drinking water meets the new standard is to remove lead at the tap.
