Driver Rams Gate at Florida Water Facility

Sept. 21, 2004

A security guard shot a Hialeah Water and Sewer employee today when the man rammed his car into a security gate at the northwest Miami-Dade County well field, police say.

"The gate as you can see was heavily damaged, actually pinning the security guard," said Randy Rossman of the Miami-Dade County Police Department.

Police say the water and sewer employee got into a fight at his job site in Hialeah this morning before heading to the well field. That's where police said he refused to answer the guard's questions about his business there, backed up his car then rammed it into the fence.

The guard opened fire, hitting the man in the hand. The driver reportedly fled. Police found him a few miles away in a pool of water. Officers arrested him and took him to be treated for his hand.

Police say that the incident is not terror-related.
