Daytona Beach Improves Safety and Cost Efficiency at Ralph Brennan Water Treatment Plant

Oct. 20, 2006

The Ralph Brennan Water Treatment Plant in Daytona Beach, Fla., has been recognized for improving community and plant safety while providing a clean water supply through the use of sodium hypochlorite generation in replacement of a gaseous chlorine disinfection system. Since 2001, two 2,000 pounds/day ClorTecT onsite sodium hypochlorite generating systems have been utilized by the Brennan plant to disinfect water used by the city’s population of more than 100,000. The ClorTec systems have produced more than 2 million pounds of free available chlorine at an average cost of $0.170 per pound.

In recent years, onsite sodium hypochlorite generation has gained wide acceptance as a safer and more cost-effective alternative to gaseous chlorine for the disinfection of municipal water systems. Generating disinfectant at the water treatment plant without the use of dangerous chemicals eliminates potential hazards associated with transportation and storage.

The ClorTec system is manufactured by Severn Trent Services. Carter & VerPlanck, Inc., a Tampa, Fla.-based manufacturer’s representative for water and wastewater products, worked closely with the city of Daytona and Severn Trent Services on the design, delivery and service of the ClorTec system.

Marvin D. Owens, superintendent of the city of Daytona’s utilities department plant operations, received a commemorative plaque from Ali Giti, North American sales director for Severn Trent’s Water Purification Group, and Mitch Matthews, the group’s southeastern regional sales manager. Owens said, “By almost any measure, the ClorTec system has exceeded our expectations. Osite generation eliminates the use of hazardous chemicals, and ongoing operational efficiencies with low, predictable maintenance combine to provide excellent cost savings.”
