Expansion incorporates app development for battery-powered IoT devices

Itron Inc. announced it is expanding the Itron Riva Developers Community to include app development for battery-powered devices. The community invites developers to create applications using the Itron Riva platform, further enabling an ecosystem of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Itron Riva is the distributed intelligence and IoT platform that supports sensing technologies and dynamic applications at the device level.

Many gas, water, and smart city IoT applications, such as pipeline safety, water conservation and smart city sensors, do not have access to AC power. In Q1 2017, Itron Riva Development Kits will be available with a battery-powered Itron Riva board, enabling third party developers to create applications for these devices. The board features an optimized battery life and maintains reliable connectivity.

“Itron has decades of experience building long-lasting, highly-reliable and field-proven battery-powered communications. We are bringing this capability to our IoT platform with an exceptionally long battery life and expanding the possibilities of what our community of developers can create,” said Roberto Aiello, managing director of the Itron Idea Labs. “The Itron Riva Developers Community is accelerating app development and delivering on the promise of the IoT to empower smarter utilities and smarter cities worldwide.”
