The Water Quality Association (WQA) and member companies presented data to the National Classification Committee to counter rationale for a rate increase due to lower density in shipping water softeners.
The Commission is organized by carriers through the National Motor Freight Traffic Association to set shipping rates using weight, density and size as measurements. This is the second time in two years the softener issue went before the Commission.
This issue generated an unusually high response from WQA members, both large and small. Many submitted material showing that the density rating of softeners should remain the same. This effectively countered claims by a number of carriers that softener shipping had actually decreased in density over the years.
The Commission rejected the freight rate increase. Had the density rating been changed, it could have added as much as 40% to the cost of shipping softeners.
