Pittsburgh-based Calgon Carbon Corporation announced it has been awarded a contract from West View Water Authority to provide a Sentinel UV system for the disinfection of drinking water. Calgon Carbon produces, supplies and designs products, services and technologies for cleaning air and water.
The contract includes a ten-year service agreement under which Calgon Carbon will provide complete service and maintenance of the Sentinel system. This will be the largest UV disinfection system in the United States for municipal drinking water treatment and the first of its kind in Pennsylvania for surface water
treatment.
The new Sentinel system will treat up to 40 million gallons per day, protecting approximately 200,000 people in Western Pennsylvania from cryptosporidium. The system is designed to provide a cost-effective barrier against viruses, bacteria, and parasites. This environmentally safe technology does not produce disinfection by-products.
Cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite found in almost all surface waters, is highly resistant to traditional treatment methods such as chlorination. When ingested, it can cause cryptosporidiosis, an illness characterized by severe abdominal cramps and diarrhea. In individuals with suppressed immune systems, cryptosporidiosis can be fatal.
Commenting on the contract, Dan Daugherty, executive director of West View Water Authority said his board of directors "has taken a leadership role in Pennsylvania by choosing to provide its customers with an additional water treatment method that is not mandated by law."
