OpenCEL to Present Biosolids Paper at WEFTEC

Sept. 26, 2012
Paper will be presented Oct. 2 at WEFTEC in New Orleans

OpenCEL will present a paper on developments in “Using Biosolids as a Carbon Source for Denitrification” at Session 51 on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 4:00 pm.

OpenCEL’s focused pulse sludge pre-treatment systems enhance anaerobic digester performance and provide supplemental carbon addition to be used for denitrification. Using OpenCEL treated Waste Activated Sludge (WAS), digesters can produce more biogas which will be converted to energy. Moreover, biosolids output from a plant will be reduced, saving disposal costs, and reducing a plant’s environmental impact.

Treated WAS provides a supplemental carbon source to drive denitrification. As part of the lysing process, OpenCEL liberates carbon from sludge. The liberated carbon is then available as a substitute for purchased carbon such as methanol, potentially saving hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

OpenCEL is an environmental biotechnology company that offers a proprietary technology, which significantly improves processing of wastewater biosolids. Utilized for pretreating wastewater sludge prior to anaerobic digestion, the technology employs high frequency electrical pulses to break open biomass cell membranes, releasing soluble material that is more readily digested and converted to energy, reducing the amount of biosolids that are produced and disposed.

OpenCEL is a division of US Peroxide, a Trojan Technologies company headquartered in Atlanta, GA.   With an intellectual property portfolio of 12 issued patents, OpenCEL has additional patents pending and in development. OpenCEL has a long-standing affiliation with Dr. Bruce Rittman, Director of the Sweette Center for Environmental Biotechnology at Arizona State University. Most of the research and development activities of OpenCEL are conducted at ASU under Dr. Rittman’s direction.  OpenCEL has over 20 published papers directly relating to digester pretreatment and denitrification with an additional 25 published papers utilizing OpenCEL technology for other applications.
