AWWA Continues to Address Critical Security Issues

While a safe and secure water supply has always been a high priority, 9/11 was a call to action for water utilities across the nation—they have assessed vulnerabilities, focused resources and remained vigilant in protecting public health and meeting new security challenges.

As the authoritative resource for safe drinking water, AWWA continues to provide its members with the latest information to help them address issues related to security. Several upcoming seminars are designed to help utilities as they continue to assess new security concerns.

Maintaining & Securing Water Distribution Systems - September 23-24: Chicago, IL

Designed to help managers of water distribution as they prepare to face any challenge that may impact their infrastructure and ultimately their customers, this two-day seminar will present state-of-the-art corrective and preventive maintenance materials, along with other information to aid in preparing to meet the challenges of these critical issues confronting water providers.

Cyber Security - October 7-8: Peoria, AZ

Participants will learn what types of action should be taken to secure SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems and other computer-based systems from outside intrusion.

Crisis Communications – October 19-20: Baltimore, MD

Attendees will learn valuable strategies and techniques for managing communications in the event of an emergency, with a focus on media relations. A hands-on drill will allow participants to put the principles and strategies explored during the seminar into practice.

Emergency Response Planning – November 16-17: Denver, CO

Experts will teach utilities how to prepare effective Emergency Response Plans (ERPs) for USEPA incorporating the results from their Vulnerability Assessments as required under the Bioterrorism Act of 2002.
