The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) will investigate the viability of storing Melbourne's stormwater in underground aquifers for later reuse.
The Victorian Government has announced $10 million ($7M USD) towards stormwater conservation projects.
As much stormwater flows out into Port Phillip Bay as Melbourne uses each year. The CSIRO will investigate whether some of that stormwater could be redirected into underground aquifers to be reused by irrigators and industry.
The government has also announced $2 million ($1.4M USD) over two years to extend its water rebate program for those who install water efficient products in their homes.
