Feb. 3, 2014
The technology will be jointly marketed through the Verizon Partner Program

Aclara Technologies LLC now offers utility companies a secure, standards-based solution to backhaul data from meters and other utility-operated devices over a virtual private network (VPN) operating on Verizon’s network.

Aclara’s Metrum Cellular VPN-based advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solution enhances AMI deployment planning with a solution for utilities deploying cellular technologies for advanced metering infrastructure.

“We think the industry will view this solution as a true breakthrough in terms of effective, direct-to-the-meter, utility communications at the lowest cost,” said Aclara President Brad Kitterman. “Aclara’s Metrum Cellular solution is a proven technology that’s easy to install, secure and based on open IP standards. Pairing Metrum and Verizon can provide utilities with the most reliable, highly functional cellular AMI system at an excellent price point.”

The solution includes encryption technologies that isolate meter data from other traffic on the public cellular network. Aclara Metrum Cellular also provides pass-through communications to billing, making it compatible with any data-collection standard employed by the utility, including MV-90.

The Metrum Cellular solution will be jointly marketed through the Verizon Partner Program, of which Aclara is a Silver member. Utilities purchasing the solution through the Verizon Partner Program have one point of contact for all services and support.
